Karen's Day at Shands

Karen wanted a place for family and friends to be able to see how she is doing each day at Shands. This is how she is making that happen.

got myself admitted again!!

March21

hi everyone,

I/they figured out why I have been having all the chest/back pains.  I thought I had pulled a muscle, but when after several days it just wasn’t getting better,  I started worrying more.  Saturday when Don and I went to clinic, they ran some tests and found out I have a couple of blood clots.  They are sometimes caused by the PICC line (IV access located in my upper left arm).  One clot is in my neck and the other is in my armpit area.  I am now on heparin (anticoagulation therapy) IV, and they had to remove the PICC line.  I should get discharged (back to camper life) in a day or two, and continue with clinic visits until my counts recover.   they will put me on some type of anticoagulation therapy for several months to ensure no more clots.

Mom and dad took the boys to see a movie “diary of a wimpy kid”, and then brought them here to the hospital to hang out.  they picked them up again last night around 9 pm.  They will get to hang out today until time to go back to panama city this evening with Don.  I found out that they can stay with me here at the hospital overnite.  I never knew that.  Maybe when I come back for my transplant they will take turns spending the night here.  that would be alot of fun.

all is well,

karen

The weekend didn’t turn out exactly as we had planned. Karen had to be admitted for treatment and for her safety. Consequently, we had a fun weekend with two of our grandsons. We asked the boys what they wanted to do, so we went to see the movie “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”. It was a was a cute movie about a boy in middle school. It was a movie we all enjoyed. I saw the trailer of “Letters to God”. The story of a brave boy dealing with cancer and chemo and the lives he touches. Looks like a good one. May be a tear jerker, don’t know. I plan to see that one. Mainly because of the faith that is shared in it. Made by the same people that did “Facing The Giants”, “Flywheel” and “Fireproof”. I have all those on DVD.
Keep us in your prayers as it is hard to leave friends and family. You are our prayer warriors.

prayers. Keep your head up girl and hold on to our heavenly father.

Hi Karen,I had a small basal cell removed from my upper lip today. It’s beginning to hurt like heck. However, I think it is a small inconvience compared to what you guys have been dealing with daily.
The movie that your mom is talking about (Letters from God) was filmed here in Winter Garden last year. My paster and some of the church members were envoled in it. I had two people on the movie team I was praying for.It was two guys. We were given the chance to participate by drawing names at church one sunday. It was a very moving experience,as we held them up in prayer each day.
My dear one,the Lord has you in His arms, just think as a nurse ,you understand so much more than most people. You have the angels at your side each day, some are earthly and some are not.
    Psalm 91:4
He shall cover Thee with His feathers, and under His wings shalt thou trust:His truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Amen
Much love today and allways,Auntie M

Ack! I’m sorry, Karen, I totally forgot to call you yesterday while Josh was at his lesson. Of course, he was riding a new-to-him horse so I was watching him like a hawk plus riding herd on Logan to make sure he was doing homework, and then I got a return call from Sylvan (to discuss their services with an eye to getting help for Josh in math) and was on the phone with the Sylvan regional director for awhile. Anyway, the horse Josh rode was Sundance, an absolutely adorable Welsh/Arab (who has the same exact face shape as Zipp, which tugs at my heartstrings every time I see him). It was great experience for him to ride a more sensitive and forward horse as that is what he’ll have in Taz when he starts riding him (hopefully this summer!). Josh REALLY liked him! He told me he wants to ride him every lesson now and I reminded him he’d probably have to fight Kylie (who lessons with him and has been riding Sundance) for him as she loves Sundance, too.

When is too late to call at night? If you go to bed at 8:30, I don’t want to call at 9:00 but it is hard for me to call and really chat while the boys are still up. Plus, I need to do some work on the driveway before dark today as we have our small group coming to our house this Friday night and I need to fill in some of the craters, especially since it’s going to rain again tomorrow and tomorrow night. 😛

We’re all praying for you and will continue doing so. I love you and don’t you forget it!

    Tina
