Karen's Day at Shands

Karen wanted a place for family and friends to be able to see how she is doing each day at Shands. This is how she is making that happen.

October29

Hi everyone,

I am feeling pretty good today.  Just a little sleepy.  Had some Chick fil A waffle fries with Polynesian sauce and it actually tasted Good! yum.  I may eat that again sometime.

Yesterday, Melissa and Marco,  Crystal, and Dennis and Robin, along with my family, all came to visit, so it was a really nice day.  Thanks everyone.  The visit really perked me up.  These are some of my “horsey friends” so we got to talk about my favorite subject.

Melissa gave me a wonderful shorter haircut so it should help as my hair continues to thin.  I will say it is still thick enough that you can’t tell yet.  Don took photos.  Maybe I will get to enjoy it another week or two.  I keep hoping I wont loose it, but it is definitely falling out.

Thanks to my friends at work.   They are really good about keeping me comfortable, but I don’t like to take anymore medicine into my system than I have to have.  My kidneys and liver are doing great and all other labs are hanging in there too.  They have given me platelets and some electrolytes, oh, and of course IV antibiotics, but that’s about it.   Oh wait, and then there’s the valtrex, diflucan, and preveced, and multi vite.  Oh, and the birth control.  No bleeding allowed in this joint.   Then there is the benadryl.  I seem to be allergic to something, so I have a rash around my neck.  I have a central line so they are making sure I’m not scratching.   It feels so good to scratch.  oh well, I guess I’m on alot of preventive stuff. They tell me I’m doing really good.  I seem to keep a headache, and the flu-like symptoms can make me cry, but sometimes I just feel okay.  That makes a good day!

God bless everyone.  I love you and thank you for all the calls, cards, and comments.

love karen

    Hi Karen!

I’m first poster today (unless it gets too long and someone clicks submit before me)! LOL! Yum, CFA waffle fries . . . love ’em! You can have the Polynesian, though; I like mine plain. ;-D Is Don going to post a photo of your new haircut? Can you even post photos here? (I’m not sure how this blog stuff works!)

If you’re looking for computer fun and a way to while away some time, there’s always FarmVille, FarmTown, FishWorld, MyAquarium, Happy Horses (I haven’t started that one yet), Castle Age and such on FaceBook. I’ve started playing Howrse (www.Howrse.com), too, though I can’t devote a lot of time to it. My horse there is Anastazi (big surprise, right?).

I just wanted to pop in and say hi, I love you, I’m praying for you, and I look forward to seeing you (I’m still targeting November 14 for a visit).

    God bless you!

    Love,
    Tina

    Hey Karen-

Glad to know you are having a better day! You speak of the rash around your kneck. Chemo has a tendency to bring about shingles in people with reduced immune system. Granted that you had Chicken Poxs, It is usually painful and itchy as it begins to heel. There is a soak called Dom Bora you mix it with some water and put maybe a rag or some gauze in the solution then ring it out and just do compresses to the area it soothes the skin really well. They would have it there, It is over the counter so no script needed. It want cure anything just makes the skin feel much better. Keep up the great work on keeping up your spirits when do you expect to be heading home? Let us know. Take care!

    Hi Karen,

Just wanted to pop in and say hi today and let you know that you are in my thoughts and prayers continually. I’ve turned my small group at church on to your blog and asked for their prayers, as well, so if you get messages from people you don’t even know, that might be where they’re coming from. 🙂

    Love,
    Tina

Hi Karen, I know you don’t know me but I’m your Uncle Tom’s daughter. I met Uncle Kenny and Aunt Muffie when I came to visit dad over labor day and they showed me all the pictures of you and your family. What a wonderful family you have. I am so sorry you are sick I will be praying for you I know this is very hard. I am planning on coming down again for Christmas, maybe we can meet then. I would love to meet all my new cousins. Please take care and know that you have people here in Tennessee praying for you too. God’s Blessings on you, Cindy

Today is Oct30. I know all Karen’s friends are waiting for the next entry. Both Don and Karen didn’t get much sleep last night. Karen is having an alergic reaction to one of the meds and has an annoying rash around her neck. Tomorrow will be a better day. We move to the new hospital on Sunday and everyone says it is beautiful. We need a change of scenery.
