Karen's Day at Shands

Karen wanted a place for family and friends to be able to see how she is doing each day at Shands. This is how she is making that happen.

What a week!

August9

It’s Monday. What happened this past week? Well, I had just left Karen in Gainesville with her parents and headed back to return to work on Monday morning. That has not worked out exactly as had been stated when I started leave and may not, but I am patiently waiting for the final word on that.

The bigger item though is that last Monday morning they put Karen back in Shands “for a day” to work on getting her liver enzyme levels back in line. They are finally letting her out today. We only have a couple more little pieces of paperwork that they are putting together. Karen was about to reach the end of her rope and was planning her escape. I am so glad that they are releasing her.

More details later. The summary is that we are getting back to the camper and our ‘normal’ life of Gainesville/Shands. Today is about Day 94. Still looking forward to Day 100.

    KAREN,
HELLO COWGIRL! THIS IS MY 1st POST AND ITS REALLY A NOTE TO YOU BUT I AM KINDA OLD AND NOT SURE IF THIS IS THE RIGHT PLACE TO GET THIS TO YOU SO I AM GUESSING YOU WILL GET THIS. GLAD TO HAVE SOMEWHERE TO SEND YOU SOME LOVE ,PRAYERS AND POSITIVE THOUGHTS.
YOU PROBABALY NEED A REMINDER ABOUT WHO I AM. A FEW YEARS AGO YOU CAME TO LOOK AT OUR HOUSE IN BAYOU GEORGE WHEN WE SELLING(2 STORY). I HAD THE UGLIEST CREME COLT YOU EVER LAID EYES ON. HE WAS AT A PLACE IN HIS LIFE WHERE HE PROBABLY DIDN’T THINK HIS CAHANCES OF SURVING LOOKED SO GREAT. ONE DAY THIS BEAUTIFULL YOUNG WOMAN CAME TO LOOK AT MY HOUSE AND SPENT MORE TIME LOOOKING AT THE UGLY DUCKLING (COLT) NAMED CASPER I HAD JUST SAVED. ME BEING A NEW HORSE MOM DIDN’T HAVE A TRUE CLUE AS TO WHAT I NEEDED TO DO FOR HIM. HE WAS ONLY JUST 3 MONTHS OLD, JUST TAKEN AWAY FROM HIS MAMA…. ALL LEGS, EARS, EYES AND,RIBS. COVERED WITH RAIN ROT AND, FULL OF WORMS. THIS ANGEL OF A YOUNG WOMAN CALLED KAREN TOLD ME IN ALOT OF WORDS ALL THE THINGS I NEEDED TO START DOING FOR HIM. WE WORMED HIM (NEARLY KILLING HIM WE THOUGHT 🙂 AND TREATED THE RAIN ROT. I REMEMBER MY HUSBAND LEAVING OUR DRIVE WAY ON A HARLEY DAVIDSON MOTORCYCLE AND KARENS EYES LIGHTING UP SAYING SHE HAD NEVER RIDDIN’ ON ONE OF THOSE AND MY HANDSOME , GENTLEMAN OF A HUSBAND TOLD HER TO HOP ON AND HE TOOK HER FOR A RIDE DOWN THE STREET AND BACK. SHE CAME BACK BEAMING.
BUYING OUR HOUSE DIDN’T WORK OUT OUT BUT HER INTEREST AND LOVE OF HORSES WORKED OUT FOR CASPER. I AM POSITIVE IT MADE A DIFFERENCE IN HIS BEING HERE TODAY.
HE STAYED UGLY FOR A LONG TIME MISS KAREN. BUT HE WAS A FIGHTER …. HE LOVED LIFE , THE MORE WE TOOK CARE OF HIM THE STRONGER HE GOT AND BY HIS 180 DAY MARK SOMETHING OF A MIRICALE BEGAN TO SHOW ITS SELF. HE WAS ALREADY MUCH STRONGER AND HAPPIER. I THINK THE HAPPY WAS BECAUSE HE KNEW HE WAS LOVED AND CARED FOR AND SAFE, BUT YOU COULD SEE THE BEAUTY BEGINING TO COME TO HIM. HE WAS FILLING OUT AND MUSCLES GREW AND HIS COAT WAS SHINY. HIS ATTITUDE WAS SASSY LIKE A LITTLE STUD HORSE SHOULD BE BUT STILL LOVING.
AT A YEAR HE WAS A LITTLE MAN AND 100%. HE HAD NO MEANNESS
ONLY A LOVING HEART AND HE WAS TRULY BEAUTFULL. WHEN WE MOVED TO THE SANDHILLS AND HE TURNED 2 1/2 I BROKE HIM TO RIDE … HE NEVER BUCKED ME JUST TOOK OFF RIDING. I CRIED NOBODY BUT ANOTHER COWGIRL WOULD UNDERSTAND THAT MOMENT. IT FILLS YOUR HEART. NOT LONG AFTER HE CAME UP LAME W/ A BONE SPUR ON HIS REAR SESMOID THAT WAS UN FIXABLE. ANOTHER HEART BREAK FOR ME. I KNEW I COULD NEVER RIDE HIM AS A TRAIL HORSE THE WAY I RIDE (5-7hrs) . MY HUSBAND HAS HAD 2MAJOR BACK OPERATIONS FORCING ME TO MAKE SOME HARD CHOICE IN DOWN SIZING HORSES. CASPER WAS THE ONE TO LEAVE SINCE I COULD NOT RIDE HIM. TALK ABOUT A BROKE HEART!!!. I PRAYED ALOT TO BE ABLE TO LET HIM GO AND THEN FOR A GOOD HOME TO COME. WELL AFTER SOME TIME IT ALL FELL IN PLACE. A LADY CAME INTO MY LIFE THAT HAD TO PUT HER HORSE DOWN AND NEEDED TO FILL A HOLE IN HEART. SHE TOOK CASPER. HE IS VERY WELL CARED FOR … A HEATED BARN, LOTS OF “OUTFITS”, GOOD FEED AND VETS,
SPOILED ROOTON , SHE KEEPS ME UPDATED AND HE IS VERY CLOSE.
ITS BEEN A YEAR NOW AND I AM GOING TO GO VISIT HIM SOON.
I GUESS I AM TELLING YOU ALL THIS ‘CAUSE I KNOW YOU ARE GOING TO PROBABALY HAVE TO MAKE SOME (MORE)BIG CHANGES IN YOUE LIFE TOO. I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT I KNOW ITS HARD EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR SOME REASON,NOTHINGS FAIR BUT YOU SEEM TO BLESSED WITH GOOD PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE, YOU HAVE GOOD FAMILY AND FRIENDS. YOU TOUCHED MY LIFE AND MADE A LASTING IMPRESSION. CASPER AND I ARE FOREVER GRATEFULL!
WE WILL CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR YOU. YOU KEEP POSITIVE AND STRONG LOVE YOU COWGIRL

Karen spent from Aug 2 to the 10th in hospital on her supposedly 1 day admission. I was with her until Don was able to return to Gainesville on the 9th. She got to come back to PC Thursday, Aug., 12th and spent the weekend with her children. A much needed reprieve. Back to camper life and clinic Gainesville/Shands, Monday the 16th. She has been going to clinic everyday since then to check and make sure the medicine is doing what it is supposed to do. As soon as the doctors give the ok, she should be able to come back to PC for more family time. It’s a delicate balance of medicine until the new graft learns it’s job. Many of the meds have bad side effects, so the doctors are trying to tweak them for the right balance for Karen.
